NASCAR and IndyCar Go Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and for the motorsports community, it’s a time to show support and bring awareness to a cause affects millions of people from all walks of life. Each season, drivers from many different series trade their traditional paint scheme colors and race suits for various shades of pink instead.

This season, NASCAR drivers Brad Sweet, Brian Scott, Regan Smith, Parker Kligerman, Matt Kenseth, Austin Dillon, Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Elliott Sadler are just a few who are running special paint schemes throughout the month of October. IndyCar drivers are also getting in on the awareness campaign. James Hinchcliff and Dario Franchitti will both be sporting pink cars before the season is over.

One driver who is going above and beyond to bring awareness to Breast Cancer Research and prevention is Stewart-Haas Racing driver

Danica Patrick. Unveiling her new No.10 GoDaddy Chevrolet yesterday in New York City, Patrick will trade her neon green paint scheme for a hot pink one the entire month of October.

“GoDaddy has been such a strong partner in the fight against breast cancer… the fact that GoDaddy wanted to ‘go pink’ for the whole month of October really says a lot about our commitment to this cause,” Patrick said Tuesday.

Making various stops yesterday in the Big Apple, Patrick talked to reporters from Fox News, the Huffington Post, NASCAR Now, just to name a few. Sporting a bright pink polo and matching converse shoes, Patrick told her own personal story of watching a friend go through a double mastectomy after she had tested positive for a breast cancer gene. Thankfully, her friend is just fine, but others are not so lucky.

“It’s not only important as a female athlete but as a female…it affects husbands and fathers,” Patrick told NASCAR Now. “It’s about

using my platform to be able to raise awareness and raise some money…”

GoDaddy will be donating $50,000 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Chevrolet will donate $200 for every lap that the new 2014 pink Camaro SS leads under caution at Talladega and Martinsville and last month’s race at Atlanta. New pink merchandise will be on sale at the track and online and Patrick part of the proceeds from sales will also be donated to breast cancer research.

Fellow GoDaddy driver James Hinchcliffe is also going pink this weekend in Houston for the IndyCar duels for breast cancer awareness.

“Well, I’ve been told real men wear pink, so I am all for it,” said Hinchcliffe. “But seriously, it’s a great opportunity to support a fantastic cause and I’m really happy that GoDaddy has let us be a part of their campaign. They have been tremendous supporters of Breast Cancer Research in the past; it’s great to see them continue that and to help out in our little way. It is never hard to spot the GoDaddy green car on track, but don’t worry, the GoDaddy PINK car will be just as easy to see!”

Seeing drivers, teams and sponsors show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness month gives the racing community a great big gold star. With all of the controversy and backlash NASCAR has received in recent weeks, bringing attention to a great cause is the perfect way to get back in the headlines.
