My time as an intern at Powell Broadcasting and and Q102 is officially over. I have learned so much during my time with the company and made some great contacts along the way.
Moose taught me so much during the time I spent with him on air and everything I took from my time on Q102 I will be able to use for years to come. Besides my time spent on Q102, I was also able to work with KSUX 105.7, KOOL 99.5 and Y101.3. Getting to know the personalities that work on air for these stations has been a blessing. They have all taught me so much and have given me great advice in the process. Now that I have seen the radio industry firsthand, I think it may be time to see what the world of television has to offer. But don't worry, I hope to be sticking around Powell Broadcasting for a while. Intern Katie

Although my time on air with Moose in the Morning has come to a close, my time spent with Powell Broadcasting is still in full swing!
I haven't been on air but I have been in the studio! Being behind the scenes so to speak this semester has been a lot of fun but definitely involves many weekends at the station. Recently, I have been running the board for a handful of the stations at the company while their on-air personalities are out on the streets. Running the board is not all that difficult but it can be a bit nerve-wracking. Each station has their own board and each board, although they function the same, runs just a bit differently. Also, each personality likes their remote broadcast aired a little differently as well. Whether pre-recorded or aired live, running the board for a live remote broadcast is a lot of fun. I still have a few weeks left in the internship and I can't wait to see what else I will learn while I am here. My time as part of the "Moose in the Morning" show has officially come to a close.
Since my junior year at Morningside College starts in just a few days, my summer internship with Moose and Q102.3 unfortunately has to come to an end. I have learned so much over the last eight weeks and I can't believe how fast it went! Being able to get a glimpse of what all has to go in to a morning radio show was eye-opening. It's a lot of work, but it has inspired me to try and start up a mornings show here at Morningside. There is something about a morning radio show that just makes mornings go by so much quicker and easier. The dynamic and lightness that you can have with a morning show compared to an afternoon show is intriguing and fun to experience firsthand! Being a part of the morning show on a top-40 station really opened my eyes to a different type of music. Before this summer, I was a country girl. I hardly ever listened to any other type of music other than country. Now, I find myself listening to a wide variety, even classic rock! I am sad my time at Q102 is over but thankfully, my time with Powell Broadcasting is not. All of the great people I have come to know during the course of this internship have helped me realize that I belong in the business of broadcasting. Now, whether or not that is going to be the radio side, I really don't know. Put me in front of the camera, I may just find a home there as well. Signing off, Intern Katie Everyone deserves a break once in a while right? Took a week off as went on a little vacation up to the lake in Minnesota for 8 days of relaxation and isolation...literally. But I'm back for week seven of my time at Q102 and I'm sad to say that unfortunately, my time is almost up. School starts back up in a little over a week which means...morning classes. Good thing I am used to early mornings right!? Waking up for my 8am class will seem like nothing! Anyway, I just did on-air work this week. I really tried to pay attention to how Moose and our News Girl Josie interact on-air this week. They both have such great chemistry and never cease to make me laugh...histerically! We had a concert in town this week. Nickelodeon's Big Time Rush and Victoria Justice were here in Sioux City on Friday and I was able to meet the members of BTR! Ok, so this wasn't a Q experience...but it ties in! The members of BTR stopped into the Y while I was at work Thursday and Friday this week and if you think all celebrities have big egos then you are definitely mistaken. The members of BTR are definitely some of the nicest guys you will meet and they even sang to us! Not officially of course but they definitely knew the song playing on the radio! Anyway, so that is week 7 here at Q102. I believe next week is my last week since school starts in about 10 days but man, my time here has sure been a blast! Intern Katie Six weeks. That's how long I've been a part of the morning show at Q102 as "Intern Katie." Six weeks. Six weeks of playing a game called 2 Truths and a Lie, which had been renamed Liar Liar, and telling the Q Audiance things about myself that even I didn't remember. Six weeks. That's how long I've been getting up at 6am to head into the radio station for the best hours on-air that I've ever experienced! Only a few more weeks left in this internship unfortunately but thankfully, I will be sticking around Powell Broadcasting as a weekend DJ and board opp for Y Country. Stay tuned to see what else this life in the broadcasting world has in store for this Midwest girl with very big dreams. Intern Katie Well, I have been part of the Moose in the Morning Show for over a month and time has flown by! Moose has been showing me a bunch of different things during the time that I've been in the studio. Anything from trimming production, adding it to the local network, deleting old production, live phone calls, and so much more! With school starting in a few weeks, it's sad to think that I only have a little bit of time left. I have gotten a lot more comfortable on-air and can feel that transitioning into my air time at Morningside and also on Y Country. Pretty cool to see and experience! With all of this experience within the radio station, I've been able to see a glimpse of just how much effort goes in to running and working in a radio station. I can't wait to bring this back to Morningside and apply what I have learned to KMSC and even some of my friends and peers in the station. This summer has been crazy busy but I don't want it to end! Stay tuned :) Intern Katie One month in to this internship and all I can say is, boy have I learned a ton! Spending so much time on air and seeing how radio is done in a bigger market is really interesting. You are constantly on your toes! I'm having a great time with Moose in the studio and hopefully everything that I am learning will transfer over to the college station this school year. Well, short post this week. Stay tuned! Well...it isn't as hard to get up early in the morning as it used to be! I think it i safe to say that I am no longer cussing at my alarm clock when it goes off at 6am; it's more of an annoyed moan. I also have it set to where I don't have the option to hit snooze button or I will be late.... really late. Anyway, I was able to do some pretty cool things this last week with Q102. I was the annual Saturday in the Park festival here in Sioux City. In all of the years that I have lived in Siouxland, my entire life, I have never been to Saturday in the Park or even the big parade the day before. This year, with Q102, I got to experience both! I was able to walk in the parade, throwing out Mardi Gras beads and candy to the people lining the streets on downtown Sioux City. I've been in parade before, but never one with no many people. Scratch that, I marched in a huge parade in Chicago my freshman year of high school, but never a big one here in my own town. The next day was Saturday in the Park, a day where 30-40 thousand people invade Grandview Park in Sioux City for live music, food, and lots of fun. This year, ZZ Ward and Melissa Ethridge were just two of the many acts that took the stage. I was there, in the middle of it all, for about 4 hours. I was able to see what all goes into live remotes and the equipment, or lack there of, that is involved. In school, our remotes involve a lot of equipment whereas, here at Powell Broadcasting, they use their cell phone and a mic with bluetooth. Super simple! Can we invest in one of these Morningside? So my Saturday in the Park experience was an absolute blast! And the food? To die for! I had a HUGE sno-cone and let me just say that it was the best $4 I spent all weekend. They even let you put your own syrup on and I may have went a tad overboard. I also grabbed an authentic gyro on my way out of the park. I love Greek food and wish mom would make it more often (we are part Greek). Anyway, that was the big things that happened this week at Q102. I am loving this internship and am so glad that I have this amazing opportunity! Keep tuning in, you never know what you might just learn about me :) Sincerely, Intern Katie Week two....complete! Well, it was my first full week anyway and boy, the early mornings are a struggle!
So, for reference...and if I ever forget when this summer was like... Ill give you a typical rundown of my day: 6AM: ALARM!!!!!!!! 6:30: make the 20+minute trek to Powell Broadcasting for my internship. 7-9:30: internship on Q102.3! 10-12pm: Morning Wrap-Up on KMSC Fusion 93 12-1: hurry home...a tad fast...to eat lunch and change clothes. 1-6ish: YMCA!!! (Wednesdays I get off at 7:30) Off of work.... FOOD!!!! Rest of my night: write...write...write. Maybe throw a shower in there somewhere... 10pm... Turn on The latest episode of RaceHub on the DVR... Set the sleep timer for 11:30 and goodnight! 6AM: ALARM!!!!!! Yup... 10hrs of work a day.... That's not even including my weekends.... Oh boy... Anyway! Getting up early is not my forte but the fact that I'm getting real time with a great radio station in town definitely makes up for that. :) Got to make an appearance at an event, a We Pay Wednesday event with the show and was able to meet some of the listeners! I also got some great food from a new place in town too and let me tell you...DELICIOUS! So besides that and some great on-air topics that we covered throughout the week, I had a great time! Learned a lot too :) So, if you want to tune in, head on over to Q102online.com and check us out! On air from 6am to 10am every morning! Until next week.... Intern Katie Well, I started my internship at Q102.3 here in Sioux City this week and although I have only been in studio for two days, I can already tell I am going to learn a lot and have a ton of fun in the process!
I was on air the very first day and although I have radio experience, being on air in a big market, compared to college radio, is pretty intimidating. What makes it even more daunting is that I am stepping in right as one of the morning hosts is stepping out and leaving the show. I know that I am not taking his place, I am literally just the intern there to learn everything I possibly can about the radio business but listeners don't like change. That was definitely evident when a listener called in the second day and said she was no longer listening to the station because she didn't like the sound of my voice. Her loss right?! Anyway, I am so excited to see where this internship takes me this summer and to see how much I take away from it in the end. Hard to believe that I have two years of college left before I get kicked out into the big bad world. Hopefully that big bad world includes a lot of racing! One of the requirements for this internship is that I write a paper or keep a journal of my experiences and what all I learn in the process so I thought, why not share my journey with you! So follow along if you'd like of course :) With that said, not much to report this week. Stay tuned, you never know what may happen...cause I sure don't! Sincerely, Katie :) |
